From Backyard Beginnings to Growing Community *
I Slay started with two sisters who loved fashion, shopping, and—most of all—swapping clothes. After struggling to find inclusive spaces at thrift stores and swaps, they realized that plus-size people deserved a place of their own. In February 2024, the first I Slay Clothing Swap was held in founder Christabell Nunez’s backyard. What began with 20 people and a Kia Soul packed to the brim quickly grew. One Instagram post later, Dr. Syd Young of OutWellness offered a home for the swap—and the rest is history. Now, nearly a year later, I Slay hosts over 150 attendees each month and has become the go-to event for plus-size women, femme-identifying, trans, and non-binary folks to swap fashion, build community, and slay.

How to Swap
General, RSVPs, Parking & Accessibility FAQs
-
The I Slay Plus-Size Clothing Swap is a free, monthly community event in Austin, TX that creates a safe, body-positive, and sustainable space for women, non-binary, and trans folks in plus-size bodies (sizes 14+ or XL and up) to swap clothing and accessories.
-
As of July 2026 Swaps are sponsored and hosted at Quacks on Menchaca.
Dates and times are posted on our website and RSVP page at www.islaylife.org/links
Note: at times we collaborate with other businesses, and location could change. Always check our swap and events page for location information.
-
Yes! 💕 Our swap is completely free to attend and participate in — no entry fees or tickets needed.
We believe that clothing should be accessible to everyone, regardless of income or background. Plus-size clothing is often more expensive and harder to find, so we make sure this space stays open, inclusive, and judgment-free for all. -
Our swaps are opened to all to attend. We ask that every one respect the venue, board, volunteers, staff and attendees.
-
We welcome anything that fits plus-size bodies, generally sizes 14 and up (XL and above). Don’t worry too much about the tag — if it fits a plus-size person, it belongs here.
-
Yes — as of July 2025, RSVP + QR check-in are required for all attendees to help us with grant reporting and capacity planning. This information supports our ability to secure funding and keep the swap free for everyone.
-
You can arrive max 30 minutes early to drop off your items for sorting by volunteers. However, no one is allowed to enter the swap area before the official start time.
-
No problem! We run from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and you’re welcome to come any time during those hours. We do a hard stop at 3:00 p.m. out of respect for OutWellness and their programming after our event.
-
Absolutely, note that RSVP is still required.
You’re welcome to come see how it works, meet people, and get the vibe. We understand it can be nerve-wracking entering a new space — especially as a plus-size person — but you’ll find this environment welcoming, supportive, and full of joy.
-
If we reach capacity, we’ll use a one-in, one-out method to keep the space comfortable and safe. That’s why we ask everyone to RSVP and check in with their QR code.
-
Of course! As long as they’re respectful for the venue, staff, board, volunteers and attendees they are more than welcome to come.
-
While we love your kids, our swap space is small and can get crowded. For everyone’s comfort and safety, we ask that only guests 13 and older attend.

How does the swap work?
RSVP and check in at the door.
Drop off your clothing with a volunteer.
We’ll sort items into categories.
Once items hit the racks and tables, you’re free to browse and shop!
Enjoy the music, community, and body-positive vibes.
-
We’ve got hangers covered, but we recommend bringing a reusable tote or laundry bag to carry your new finds.
-
No worries! Check with the sorting station — we sometimes have extra bags on hand, though they’re not guaranteed.
-
Yes! Many guests wear leggings or light clothing so they can try items on quickly. You can also use the dressing rooms if you prefer. Whatever makes you comfortable is perfectly fine.
-
After each swap, our board members and volunteers sort remaining clothing.
Here’s what happens:We donate to local nonprofits that give clothing away for free to those in need.
We keep some items for the next swap to ensure great variety.
We donate quarterly, or sooner if we have extra clothing.
Because plus-size clothing is harder to find in most donation centers, we make sure every item goes where it’s truly needed.
If your organization would like to receive donations, please email howdy@islaylife.org. -
No strict limit! We just ask everyone to be thoughtful — take what you’ll actually wear and love so there’s plenty for everyone.
-
No, due to space we do not have dressing rooms. Please refrain from taking clothing into the bathroom as those are reserved for guests and customers to use while in the space.
-
Please do not remove anything from the sorting station. Our volunteers handle sorting to make sure items are placed correctly. Once clothes hit the racks or designated tables, that’s your time to shop!
-
Nope! You can bring your items on the day of the swap. We also offer optional early drop-off days each month for anyone who wants a smoother swap-day experience.
-
Sign up for a drop-off slot at www.islaylife.org/links. Bring your clothes during your chosen time, and our volunteers will sort them ahead of the event. On swap day, you can just check in and start swapping!
-
It’s not required, but it definitely helps! Sorting your clothes into tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and intimates before you arrive makes check-in quicker and helps volunteers organize everything faster.
-
Yes, absolutely. Life happens! The swap is about community, not transaction. You’re always welcome to come, connect, and find what you need — even if you don’t have items to give this time.
